Hot Cocktails

This delicious drink takes a little bit of prep work but it’s well worth it. The star of the show is the compound butter and I would recommend making this at home rather than at camp. To make this drink you’ll need to boil some water, and while that’s going add a tablespoon or so of the butter to your mug along with the rum and heavy cream. Pour a little of the boiling water into your mug, stirring to start melting the butter, then top off with more boiling water.

Our version of this well-known hot beverage is a little less traditional but super easy to throw together when you’re camping and you don’t want to bring the spice cabinet. All you need to do is heat the ingredients together slowly but don’t bring to a full blown boil - you don’t want to cook out the alcohol. Grab a mug and drink up! Oh, and pro tip, make sure you have a wine opener in your camping gear. Or buy wine with a twist top.

1 bottle red wine

This drink is very creamy with the RumChata so you could swap that out with peppermint Schnapps or some other flavored alcohol of your choice. To make the white hot chocolate base, you’ll need to heat together the milk, chocolate, vanilla and salt to just below boiling. Don’t walk away or you may scald the milk. Once that’s heated through just add that to your mug with the booze.

We discovered this drink on a winter weekend getaway to Leavenworth Washington. It’s a Bavarian themed town in central Washington and if you ever get the chance to visit, do it! Anyway, if you like caramel apples and whiskey this drink is for you. It’s easy to make, and you could probably get away with only using one of the whiskey’s listed below. Just heat the apple juice to your desired temperature and add it to your mug with the whiskey. Top with whipped cream.

This is the backpackers version of the Salted Caramel Apple Whiskey drink. Matt and his friends enjoyed this on one of their winter hike-in camping trips. You basically make a packet of spiced apple cider according to the directions and add in your whiskey of choice.

Making a margarita from scratch is easier than we thought and tastes so much better than using a store bought mix. We opted to make a spicy version, but you could omit the habanero or replace it with a jalapeno. Alternatively, you could substitute mango juice rather than muddling the fruit, up to you. Slice and muddle your mango and habanero, then add the rest of the ingredients and shake over ice before straining into your mug.

This iconic cocktail is basically a slug of whiskey that’s seasoned and sweetened. And it’s delicious. Start by adding the sugar cubes to your glass with the bitters. Muddle this to break down the sugar then add your whiskey and ice. Stir for 30 seconds to combine. Twist your orange zest over the glass to express the oils then add the zest to your mug and enjoy. If you want to be fancy, mix and stir everything in a separate glass and pour the cocktail over a large ice ball into your mug.

This summer classic is actually pretty easy to make at camp. For a blended version, we used our emersion blender powered by our power bank, but you could also make this on the rocks. Simply mix all ingredients together and then either blend with ice or add ice and stir to chill.
